AFTERCARE

How to Care for Your New Tattoo

Proper aftercare is essential for keeping your tattoo looking fresh and vibrant. Follow these steps to ensure a smooth healing process.

1. Removing the Bandage

  • Remove your bandage in a clean bathroom after 2–3 hours.

  • If it feels secure and comfortable, it can stay on overnight.

  • If the bandage sticks, soak it gently under warm water to loosen.

  • Keep your bedding clean during healing (around 2 weeks), and use dark sheets to avoid stains if your tattoo is uncovered overnight.

2. Washing Your Tattoo

  • Wash your tattoo with warm water and a gentle, fragrance-free antibacterial soap.

  • Only use clean hands—no sponges, cloths, or loofahs.

  • Pat dry with a clean paper towel or let it air dry.

  • You can also use a hair dryer on the cool setting to help dry the area.

3. Moisturising and Aftercare Products

  • Once dry, apply a very thin layer of tattoo balm.

  • We recommend:

    • Dr Pickles Tattoo Aftercare Balm (Australian made, available in-studio)

    • Inky Tattoo Salve (also available in-studio)

  • Rub in gently, then dab off any excess with a clean paper towel.

  • Use balm for the first 2–3 days, then switch to a fragrance-free moisturiser as the tattoo begins to dry out.

4. What to Expect (and What to Avoid)

  • It's normal for the tattoo to “weep” plasma and excess ink in the first few days. Gently dab with clean paper towel—don’t wipe or rub.

  • One daily clean is usually enough unless otherwise advised by your artist.

  • You may see some ink on your towel or hands while cleaning. This is normal and not a sign of fading.

  • Avoid sun exposure, tight clothing, and strenuous activity (especially sweating) for the first 7–10 days.

  • If your tattoo is in a high-friction area, ask your artist for clothing tips.

5. What Not to Do

  • Do not scratch, pick, or peel your tattoo—even if it flakes or gets itchy.

  • Do not soak the tattoo (no baths, pools, or ocean) for at least 2 weeks.

  • Avoid direct sunlight until the tattoo is fully healed.

  • Keep pets, dirty hands, and gym gear away from your healing tattoo.

6. Healing Timeline

  • Light flaking or scabbing usually begins around day 3–5.

  • Surface healing takes around 10–14 days.

  • Full healing can take up to 4 weeks depending on your skin and placement.

  • Moisturise regularly and allow any scabs to fall off naturally.

Step-by-Step: How to Wash a Fresh Tattoo

  1. Remove the bandage carefully.

  2. Lather gentle, fragrance-free soap with warm water in your hands.

  3. Clean the tattoo using gentle circular motions to remove blood, plasma, and ointment.

  4. Rinse thoroughly and repeat gently if needed.

  5. Pat dry with a clean paper towel or use a hair dryer on the cool setting.
